Chapter 9
Adam
Maybe I was a glutton for punishment. Maybe it was my morbid curiosity coming into play. Or maybe that little moment ofâ¦whatever that was we had outside got to me. Whatever the reason, I was finally ready to hear what he had to say, but I wasnât going to make it easy on him. I was still angry at him for abandoning me, even if my heart had softened a little. But the way he said he couldnât compete with a ghost had piqued my curiosity enough to make me sit down and listen.
Rhys didnât sit, though. Instead, he stood with his back to the fireplace and stared at the wall over my shoulder. He fidgeted with the hem of his shirt and opened his mouth, only to close it again while he tried to form the words he wanted to say.
âI still remember the first time I saw you. We were standing in line for coffee, and the lady behind us dropped her purse. Remember that?â he asked, finally looking at me.
I nodded. âYeah, we both bent over at the same time to pick it up and knocked our heads together.â
Rhys smiled at the memory. âYeah, and then we struck up a conversation about how slow the service was. I thought Iâd never see you again after that, but we kept running into each other. There was something about you that drew me in. You had a lightness about you, a positive energy I was attracted to, and I finally built up the courage to ask you out when you mentioned Samuel.â
That was a surprise. He never gave me any indication he felt anything toward me other than friendship until the one night we spent together. âReally?â
Rhys nodded. âReally. The way you said his name and the way your face lit up let me know my place in your life would only ever be as a friend, and I was okay with that. Samuel was a wonderful man, and you two were the kind of couple that gave others hope that happiness was possible. I loved the love you two shared. I envied it, even.â
âYou deserve to be as happy as Samuel and I were,â I told him.
My heart ached as I remembered the love he and I shared, and I raised my hand to rub my chest. Saying his name had gotten easier over time. The memories werenât nearly as painful anymore, but the dull ache still lingered as a constant reminder that there would forever be a void that only Samuel could fill.
âThen, after his deathâ¦â Rhys swallowed hard. âI wanted to be there for you in every way possible. The feelings I had for you had faded, and I was perfectly content with my role as your best friend. Watching you spiral into despair was painful, and I did everything in my power to help you and be your shoulder to lean on, and finally, you started to smile again.â
I uncrossed my arms and shifted in my seat.
